Take a Look at the New MASK Character Designs from IDW
By Joe NUB
IDW Comics has recently revealed the costume designs for their upcoming comic’s publication, and they look awesome! Harkening back to the “Age of Nostalgia” (it’s a term I just coined so get on board with it), the designs from artist, Tony Vargas, are tight, bright, and contemporary enough to bridge the gap from 1985 to today. Vargas’ style reminds me of when the Four Horsemen reinvigorated the Masters of the Universe toy line in 2002. There was a lot of love and respect shown to the original designs, but with a modern take.
Series writer, Brandon Easton, has noted the similarities between this franchise and the “Fast & Furious” series, which I have commented on more than once on past episodes of FaboysInc IncCast (extra points if you can find the episode). It’s a no-brainer for Hasbro to take it’s vehicle-themed toy line and couple it with the most popular vehicle-centric action franchise of the last fifteen years. Obviously I’m not the only person to have thought of it, but brilliant minds and blah, blah, blah…
Now the question remains is how will the series be received? I speculate there will be a demand for the first few issues due to nostalgia, but will it have staying power? Will Hasbro release a new toy line to coincide with the book’s release, and what scale will it be in? We can all guess that Hasbro has a movie in the works, but how long after the comic is released will they begin filming? Does the fact that Hasbro changed the lead, Matt Trakker, from a blond haired, blue eyed white man, to a black man matter? Not really. Just make it a good series, and make the toys cool too. They were one of the most popular toy lines of the 1980’s so we won’t let you trash our childhood memories easily! -Nub
