STAR WARS NEWS: Rogue One Details Leak

By Muuka Muyumba

This week we were presented with the possibility of Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker joining the cast of Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One in an unknown role, but now is revealing that they may have cracked the code on just what all the fighting will be about beyond just the plans for the 1st Death Star.

1. The film is said to be set during the “Dark Time” of the Empire (between Episodes III and IV), while the setting is said to be “darker and grittier” than any other Star Wars film to date.

2. The film seems to be aiming to be much like an old school war film; Think Hamburger Hill meets Star Wars.

3. All the Jedi are said to be in hiding; expect this story to leave them in the background.

4. Stormtroopers have same armor as they do in the original films (i.e. episodes IV – VI).

5. Lots of alien life forms, Mon Calamari among them.

6. New droids and aliens will be introduced. Kind of a no-brainer, but just so you know it’s not just a bunch of rebels.

7. At-Ats, X-Wings, Y-wings, At-Sts are said to be present.

8. Implied that some of the film will take place on Yavin-4; a lot of armies in the jungle and various battlefield locations.

9. Looks like a new droid will be part of the band of rebels attempting to steal the Death Star plans.

10. Felicity Jones is seen dressed as a rebel soldier ready for battle; expect her to get her hands dirty in this one.

Rogue One doesn’t seem like a risky film on paper, but the major concern must be that there will be no Jedi in this film, and no other Star Wars film has been produced without Jedi presence. However, the is no suggestion that there won’t be a Sith Lord involved somewhere in the picture. My interest was particularly piqued when Whitaker’s name was brought up because this would be a prime opportunity to put a person of color on the wrong side of the Force in the Star Wars lineage. This could move the Empire beyond veiled allegory for the Nazis.

Gareth Edwards is set to direct Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, which is a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta and a screenplay from Chris Weitz, based on George Lucas’s characters. The film hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
