STAR WARS NEWS: Rogue One Reshoots Continue

By Muuka Muyumba

December brings us Rogue One, the first “expanded” universe Star Wars story that will tell the tale of the rebel crew that stole the plans for the first Death Star. Recently details emerged giving us character names, as well as new features of the Star Wars universe that have yet to be revealed anywhere before. Lucasfilm has asked most sites to remove these revelations as they are viewed as not final.

Of course, this should have been the biggest story of recent weeks, but the news continues to focus on the reshoots that are causing many fanboys and fangirls consternation. The worry is whether Rogue One is a major bomb waiting to happen or whether the tweaks are just added icing on a delicious cake.

A new report today from The Hollywood Reporter says that veteran stunt coordinator Simon Crane and screenwriter Tony Gilroy have been brought in to sharpen up these aspects of the film.

According to THR, Rogue One continues to be credited to director Gareth Edwards, but “…will undergo significant additional filming this summer, it was revealed earlier this week. Disney and Lucasfilm are hoping to accomplish several goals with the reshoots, including working on the tone of what has been described by sources as a ‘war movie.’ The lightening of the feel of the film is meant to broaden its appeal.”

Disney and Lucasfilm have a lot riding on a film that is meant to help broaden the scope of Star Wars beyond the Skywalker saga. Along with Rogue One, Lucasfilm will also produce a solo film on the origins of Han Solo starring Alden Ehrenreich with Chris Miller and Phil Lord directing. Rogue One is tasked with being the first Star Wars film not to feature the Jedi while Edwards promised a true war film unlike anything we’ve seen before in the saga.

Then, just a few months ago, the first trailer for the film debuted and to everyone’s delight it appeared that Rogue One would be just that…a dark war film with echoes to the original films. However, the complete film has skewed a bit too dark for Disney’s liking as they look to replicate the unprecedented success of last December’s The Force Awakens.

Despite Disney’s desires, most pundits assume that the film will be successful in its own rights, but not the level of J.J. Abrams’ reintroduction of the Skywalker saga. What’s also apparent from reports of the reshoots is that Disney and Lucasfilm are trying to craft a film for all four quadrants much like The Force Awakens. This may be a greater concern to fans because maybe these films aren’t going to be meant for everyone. The brutality of the ‘War’ fought for the Empire may be something that George Lucas wanted the films to be about.

The Clone Wars animated series has been the delivery system for Star Wars’ more serious subject matter like politics and violence. The films have always been about the Jedi and their position in the galaxy. Rogue One is not about that, so when they venture to add more Darth Vader or Han Solo or Chewbacca to the mix, then the tenor of the film is permanently altered.

The larger question may be whether this news, all of it, means that the film has effectively been taken out of the hands of the director. Edwards is a serious filmmaker of fantasy films. So series, that his version of Godzilla did not reveal the monster until 3rd act of the film, and even when we saw the beast, it was from a distance. Not to mention that there wasn’t even one laugh in that film.

When I think about Edwards’ version of Star Wars, it is a war film, and the Jedi and the Sith are the monsters. I wonder whether his cut of the film even involved Vader before his 3rd act. There will certainly be a lot more of him after these reshoots, and maybe at least one laugh. Has the Star Wars meat-grinder eaten another young director? Remember Josh Trank?

Star Wars: Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, and Forest Whitaker, and hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
