STAR WARS NEWS: Oscar-winner Ron Howard to Direct Han Solo Film to Completion

By Muuka Muyumba

Well, that didn’t take long…Kathleen Kennedy moved quickly to restore some faith in the untitled Han Solo film production by installing her friend, and a long-time Lucasfilm collaborator, Ron Howard as the director. Howard is best known for his more serious work of the late 90s and early 00s, but came up in Hollywood as a child star on The Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days. Howard made his big screen debut in a tiny film, from a first time feature director named George Lucas, called American Graffiti.

Howard went on to direct comedy classics like Night Shift and Splash before hanging his own shingle with another long-time collaborator Bryan Grazer to produce and direct varied films like The Paper, Backdraft, The Cinderella Man, Apollo 13, The Davinci Code, and Ed TV. Howard even worked for Lucasfilm back in the 1980s on the under-appreciated Willow. Howard went on to win an Oscar for his work on A Beautiful Mind in 2001.  He has never worked with Kennedy directly before, but their long Hollywood successes would suggest a common work ethic.

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

Howard takes over the the directing partners Christopher Miller and Phil Lord who had seen great success until they ran into Kennedy. Reports had Kennedy, and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, continually at odds with the tone of the film and the direction of the duo. Kennedy won out in the end and now the film will likely see significant re-shoots when the cast and crew returns to production on July 10th.

The film stars Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Michael Kenneth Williams, Joonas Suotamo, and Alden Ehrenreich as the titular hero.

The film is still slated for release on May 25, 2018.
