STAR WARS NEWS: Lucasfilm Shuts Down Development on ‘Star Wars Story’ Anthology Films

By Muuka Muyumba

Collider’s Frosty Weintraub is reporting that Lucasfilm has shut down development on any further Star Wars anthology films indefinitely. So far, those films included anything outside of the new trilogy of films such as Rogue One and Solo. Lucasfilm reportedly had films centered on Boba Fett and Obi Wan Kenobi in active development with directing names like James Mangold, and Stephen Daldry attached.

This news comes in the wake of the relative disappointment that was Solo, A Star Wars Story as it became one of the lowest grossing films of the franchise, not to mention the lowest grossing films since Disney bought Lucasfilm. Fans have been divided in their reception to the Solo film as some really loved the rollicking western feel of the film, as others have been in active revolt since Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Many fans have also had problems with the direction of the entire franchise by Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, so much so that so-called fans of Star Wars actively boycotted Solo.

The greater concern for the entire franchise must be that they came from a position of strength (The Force Awakens is the highest grossing film of all time) to such a unstable position, cancelling an entire film series. This news also suggests Kennedy’s position with the franchise may be in question considering how gung-ho she has been about the anthology series of films.
