STAR WARS NEWS: Lucasfilm Prepares Obi-Wan for a Star Wars Story Film

By Muuka Muyumba

The long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi solo film is said to be in the works according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter. The reports are that Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry is in talks to helm the movie but word is that one-time Obi-Wan, Ewan McGregor, is not a dead-set lock to return to the role.

McGregor has been a vocal proponent of an Obi-Wan ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm to produce new Star Wars films. McGregor has also continued to build on his reputation as a beguiling character actor, especially after his turn on this past season of the Minnesota-crime-anthology-drama Fargo. McGregor drew acclaim for playing two roles as the unlucky Stussy brothers whose sibling rivalry tears apart a family and a community. McGregor, of course, made his name in the public with his turn as the Jedi in the Star Wars prequels with many fans saying he was the best part of those critically addled films.

The rumors have been that Lucasfilm has wanted to make an Obi-Wan movie that focused on his time in the desert before he officially crossed paths with an adult Luke Skywalker in A New Hope. This idea may not immediately bring to mind many compelling storylines, but one rumored story has been that Obi-Wan spends much of hit time on Tatooine fending off inquisitive nere-do-wells who are trying to track him down and possibly looking for the children of Anakin Skywalker. If McGregor is the choice for the role then he’ll likely have to age up a bit to match Sir Alec Guinness’s age around the time of Obi-Wan occupation of Tatooine. McGregor is now 46 whereas Guinness was in his 60s when A New Hope began production.

What is now a recent update to canon about that period of time is that Obi-Wan finally got his revenge on his old enemy by besting Darth Maul in a duel in the desert in last season of Star Wars: Rebels.

According to THR, their sources say talks are in the earliest stages and there is no script yet. Daldry seems like an odd choice considering his directing CV which hasn’t been focused action and has been more character-focused. One sign that Daldry’s involvement makes clear is that Lucasfilm, and in particular, president Kathleen Kennedy are done with risky directing choices. They want veteran filmmakers who won’t have a problem compromising with Kennedy on her vision of the Star Wars universe.

No comment has been issued by Lucasfilm nor from Disney.
