STAR WARS NEWS: Lord and Miller Out as Han Solo Film Directors

By Muuka Muyumba

Once the photo above promised a fun and happy set and tone to a Star Wars movie, and now Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that they are parting ways with rising star directors Lord and Miller.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.

Some sources on Twitter had been suggesting the Kennedy had been having her concerns about this film or a long time. Kennedy has a hand’s on approach to filmmaking that may rankle some directors as we saw with Rogue One which clearly underwent significant changes after 3/4 of the film was already completed.

‘Solo’ is reportedly three weeks away from final shots. Lord and Miller may have run again into Kennedy’s wilting eye and may have not been as comfortable with losing control over the film as much as Rogue One director Gareth Edwards.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” stated Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Lord and Miller’s cut of Han Solo (if the film sees the light of day) will remain Hollywood lore. However, the directors will remain highly in demand and may just slide right back into the directors’ chairs for WB’s The Flash which has had its own development issues.

As for Lucasfilm, it will take a brave soul to not only complete the film but to also be daunted by classic Star Wars characters. Names I can think of right now include Logan director James Mangold, Patty Jenkins, Jordan Peele, Gareth Edwards, or maybe J.J. Abrams could come back to help his friend Kathy.

It will be really interesting to see if any of the actors walk too. The Han Solo anthology film is set to hit theaters on May 25, 2018.
