STAR WARS NEWS: Josh Trank Out as Director for Star Wars Anthology Film

By Muuka Muyumba

Josh Trank, 30, will not direct the Star Wars Anthology film that will spin out of the larger Star Wars universe. In leaving, he sent an eloquent statement of graciousness, but recent rumors do not paint a pretty picture for the future of the once-can’t-miss kid director.

“After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans. I want to thank my friends Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, Simon Kinberg, and everyone at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all.”

Reports had Fox unhappy with Trank over his performance on Fantastic Four which had Simon Kinberg as a producer on the film. Kinberg would have been intimately involved in the process of signing Trank on for Star Wars.

Lucasfilm VP development Kiri Hart said, “It was a privilege to collaborate with Josh. We are grateful for the energy and love of Star Wars that he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best.”

My attention immediately turns to Ex Machina director Alex Garland who crafted a smart, sensual, sci-fi film that starred two of the Star Wars Universe future stars in Oscar Isaac and Domnhall Gleason. No release date had been announced for the Trank’s Star Wars Anthology film.
