STAR WARS NEWS: Jon Favreau to Helm New Star Wars Series for Disney

By Muuka Muyumba

In a move that has seemed somewhat inevitable, Lucasfilm has tapped Iron Man and Jungle Book director Jon Favreau to produce a live-action Star Wars TV series for Disney’s upcoming streaming service.

Favreau has one of the pillars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe having written, directed, and starred in Iron Man in 2008. Favreau has also been involved in upcoming Star Wars projects having played roles in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Lucasfilm has recently been under some fire for its continued reliance on straight, white, and male creatives at the head of its project development. We’ll have to see whether fanboys and girls will give Kennedy and Lucasfilm the benefit of the doubt as minority hires can still happen under their current creative structure. This does continue a confounding lack of diversity in its film division.

The untitled Star Wars live-action series does not yet have a release date.
