STAR WARS NEWS: Benicio del Toro Being Eyed for Villain Role in Episode VIII

By Muuka Muyumba

Oscar winner del Toro has the offer to play the villain in Star Wars: Episode VIII, multiple sources have told TheWrap.

Rian Johnson (Looper) has been tapped to direct the film, and so far, little is known about the production beyond the fact that John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey), and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) are all likely to return in the sequel.

The timing of this report may suggest that del Toro could be part of The Force Awakens in a Palpatine type of walk-on role, and then a larger featured player in Episode VIII, in my opinion. del Toro just recently whet his franchise beak by taking on the role of The Collector aka Taneleer Tivan in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. He has regularly played heavies in films after crafting a film history as a quirky character actor, although he won his Oscar playing an earnest Mexican cop in Traffic.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently expected to start shooting early next year in advance of a May 26, 2017. No confirmation has come from Disney nor from the actor’s representatives.
