Gabriel Luna (True Detective) has been cast as the Rider for season 4 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Luna will play the latest version of Ghost Rider who has been featured in the recent comics as Robbie Reyes who transforms into the avenging anti-hero to take out the sinful.

“Season 4 will unquestionably be the series’ biggest, most ambitious story yet, and it all begins with the introduction of one of our greatest legacy characters in Ghost Rider,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “When the Spirit of Vengeance rides into S.H.I.E.L.D., it’ll change everything.”

In the comics, Reyes is a young mechanic working out of LA who lives with his disabled brother Gabe. Robbie becomes a target of the original Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, after Robbie accidentally kills another street racer in a brutal fight. Johnny Blaze grants Robbie the power of the Rider, but bonds him with the spirit of the serial killer Eli Morrow.

The character made the first appearance in the comics in All-New Ghost Rider #1 (May 2014), and was created by Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore. Another unique aspect of the new Ghost Rider is that he trades the trademark motorcycle for a black muscle car that was shown off tonight at Comic Con.

As for why Ghost Rider is coming to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., producer Jed Whedon offered an interesting answer. “With Doctor Strange coming out this year, the Marvel Universe is moving into new waters,” Whedon told EW after the show’s panel at Comic-Con on Friday. “We felt that this was obviously a great character that we’d love to have on our show that we feel fits with that shift.”

This news confirms a rumor we previously reported on the site a few months ago, and brings the Spirit of Vengeance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC on Tuesdays at 10 pm.
