MCU Phase 3 — Captain Marvel “Woman Unleashed”

By Muuka Muyumba

Warner Bros. will get the first the first crack at a female-led superhero film on June 23, 2017, but Marvel has listened to the fan-clamor and will bring Captain Marvel to be big screen in 2018.

Kevin Feige presented Captain Marvel as a new “very important” title for the MCU, making clear that Captain Marvel IS Carol Danver. She is one the most powerful hero with a cosmic powerbase. Created by writer Roy Thomas and designed by artist Gene Colan, the non-powered Major Carol Danvers first appeared as a member of the United States Air Force in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March 1968) and debuted as the first incarnation of Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1 (January 1977) after a fusion of alien Kree and human genes, which occurred in Captain Marvel #18 (November 1969).

Danvers possesses superhuman strength and durability, can fly at roughly six times the speed of sound, retains her Seventh Sense, and discharge explosive blasts of radiant energy, which she fires from her fingertips. She also demonstrates the ability to absorb other forms of energy, such as electricity, to further magnify her strength and energy projection, up to the force of an exploding nuclear weapon.

So, Danvers will be a bridge between the MCU’s techno-military past and its cosmic future. In the Ultimates comic line, she was assigned to work on Kree warrior Mahr Vehl‘s, the original Captain Marvel, security detail with General Nick Fury when Earth was threatened by Gah Lak Tus. We haven’t had a clear introduction into the Kree world, but Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been alluding to a cosmic creature as the source of restorative properties for those on the edge of death. We also don’t yet know just what MOAS character Skye is, human or alien. However, this past week’s episode was the first time that the a-word was uttered as a possible explanation for Skye’s origin.

Agents of SHIELD Blue Alien TAHITI Blue Alien in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Explained What Does It Mean For Coulson?

Most pundits assume that the mysterious alien sourcing T.A.H.I.T.I. is a dead Kree, possibly the original Captain Marvel or just a random Kree who was captured long ago by S.H.I.E.L.D./Hydra.

Marvel hasn’t hired an actor to play Carol Danvers yet, but many suspect that a shortlist of possible actors reportedly include Katee Sackhoff, Emily Blunt, Jennifer Lawrence, Katheryn Winnick, Rosamund Pike, Yvonne Strahovski, and several other blond actors.

Captain Marvel is rumored to have a cameo in Avengers: Age of Ultron, so we may find out who has been cast for the role, sooner rather than later. No creative team has been announced yet for the solo film, but I wonder whether Marvel will hire its first female director for an MCU film. Warners is rumored to be searching for female director for Wonder Woman. As you might recall, Marvel originally hired Patty Jenkins to helm Thor: The Dark World, but parted ways after creative differences.

Marvel is set to release Captain Marvel on July 6, 2018.
