MCU Phase 3 — Captain America 3: Civil War “Whose Side Are You On?”

By Muuka Muyumba

Cap 3 will be the first Marvel film released in 2016 and will set the course for Phase 3, which appears to be that The Avengers will be at odds with one another and only a major world event will bring them back together. The film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and will star Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans as well as introduce Chadwick Boseman as The Black Panther.

The general sentiment is that as The Winter Soldier changed the landscape of the MCU, and most believe that Cap 3 will also set a new template where Cap and Tony Stark pick sides in a cataclysmic controversy that splits them. In the comics, the two heroes were split on whether to register with the government to reveal their identities. In the films, this isn’t an issue as the heroes are well-known, as we’ve seen with Tony revealing at the end of Iron Man 1 that he is in fact the armored titan.

With S.H.I.E.L.D. in shambles, the few glimpses of Age of Ultron we’ve seen seems to have positioned The Avengers as some kind of militarized force to carry on as the world police with the backing of Stark Industries. Ultron may ultimately be the undoing of Stark’s privitization of peace. Could it be that the government seeks to shut down Iron Man and the Avengers after the devastation wrought by Ultron? Very likely. We could see Tony and Steve at odds over Stark’s drive to create a better mode of artificial intelligence to combat Ultron.

Whatever tears the team apart, it appears that The Black Panther will play a major role in choosing the right side of the conflict, although he calls himself, ‘his own guy’. Boseman brings gravitas to the highly anticipated role and is now a crucial cog in the plans for the film and the future of the franchise.

The Russos did a remarkable job of blending Cap, Widow, and Falcon into a mini-Avengers team in the middle of the political thriller that was The Winter Soldier. The directors return with the task of making their modern Cap into a righteous fighter for civil liberties and The American Way. Questions still remain whether we’ll see the Winter Soldier again and how he fits into the Civil War storyline going forward.

The biggest question many have is whether we will see the end of Evans’s Cap in Civil War, despite his assumed involvement in Avengers: Infinity War, Parts 1 & 2 in 2018 and 2019. Evans has voiced interest in moving away from acting and the Civil War storyline features the assassination of Cap. Who will assume his mantle? Bucky? Falcon?

We may find out when Captain America: Civil War comes out on May 6, 2016.
