Just one month ago, the world was gifted this incredible video footage:

This 15 seconds of fame for this rodent sparked a ton of buzz on the internet. Now, some of the best and brightest in the comic book world are lending their talents to answer the one question on everyone’s mind: WHO IS PIZZA RAT?

The lazy answer is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle reference – their fearless Master Splinter was caught trying to bring dinner home to the turtles. No way! First of all, Splinter was mutated by the same ooze as the turtles and would be way bigger. Second of all, the turtles get their pizza delivered, as shown in the iconic 1990 movie. But I digress.

On a long ride to this year’s Baltimore Comic Convention, a few inspired comic creators hatched an idea: What if Pizza Rat’s origins could be brought to life in comic form? Who is he really? Is he a pizza slice reviewer? A mad scientist hell bent on world domination? An advance scout for a tiny, furry apocalypse? Well, C.E.L. Welsh (CLUTCH), Amy Chu (Poison Ivy), Rafer Roberts (Nightmare the Rat), Sean Von Gorman (Pawn Shop), and many more writers and artists are going to give their own take on this incredible question.

Each writer and artist gets exactly ONE page to tell their story, and the Kickstarter will help fund a digital release, as well as a newsprint, “zine-style” physical copy, keeping the true Pizza Rat subway roots alive. Other contributors include Kelly Williams (The Cabinet), Eric Grissom (Dead Horse), Matthew Dow Smith (Hellboy, Doctor Who), Alitha E. Martinez (Batgirl), Danny Cruz (Ghostbusters), and so many more! Also, it will feature a page by Matt Little,  the intrepid videographer who discovered Pizza Rat!

The rewards are full of different ways to get the finished product, as well as score some signed work from  the contributors, and even chances to get your hands on original artwork as well. For the highest tier of 250 dollars, you will not only get all the goodies, but a guided tour to a famed pizza joint in New York City with some of the creators, and a look at the exact subway spot where Pizza Rat was last seen!

Creativity can come in all shapes and sizes, and some of the best stuff is created when talented people get together to do something that is fun and entertaining for all that are involved. Help keep the legend of Pizza Rat alive by heading over to the Kickstarter Page here and donate today!

Both my parents instilled in me at an early age the awesome power and incredible wonder of the written word. My father sat with me when I was four years old and taught me to enjoy reading with classic comic strips like SPIDERMAN, PEANUTS, B.C. and, later, CALVIN AND HOBBES. My mother exposed me to such classics of literature as Poe, Tolkien, Stoker and Doyle, and I started my own comic collection with allowance money from mowing lawns. I liked Wolverine before it was cool, I watched as Superman died and returned, and huddled under the covers as I turned the pages of SANDMAN. Reading is like oxygen to me, and all genres and formats are welcome and devoured equally. I am the co-host of The DW and Incredible Jeff Show, CEO of Permian Productions, and a reviewer at Graphic Novel Reporter. I am 34 and live in scenic Saratoga Springs New York, where I haunt coffee shops and dive bars and the best comic shop anywhere, The Comic Depot.
