KICKSTARTER PICK: STAR 72 Page Series Debut

By Jeff Ayers

Independent comics take a lot of work, from inception to completion. As you can see from the Kickstarter video for the brand new comic STAR, creator Richard Clark has been at this idea for some time. Tackling the entire process himself can seem like an incredibly daunting task, yet he is a veteran of the comic industry, and is ready to unleash his idea upon the world.

STAR is a story of adventure, intrigue and mystery, all set in a future where media is king. In fact, the title character is the most watched media personality in the world, consistently ranked number 1 in most media feeds thanks to her adventures and shenanigans. (It’s always about the shenanigans, isn’t it?) Star loves being the center of attention, but that means she doesn’t always get the attention she wants, and that can lead her into some precarious situations. Richard Clark poised the idea of what our media personalities might look like in the not too distant future, and STAR is the answer to that question. A social experiment with equal parts adventure, action and dark satire, this book will be a roller coaster ride from start to finish.

Friend of FanboysInc, Richard Clark is an accomplished comic and pop culture artist. He has worked on such titles as House of Gold and Bones from Dark Horse Comics, written by Corey Taylor of the band Slipknot. Clark is also the artist on the new series Deluge, which you can check out our coverage of issue 1 and issue 2. He has drawn for many other comic properties, but has also lent his talents to the world of pop culture, drawing such luminaries as Sir Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, comedian George Carlin, and even was commissioned to draw some likenesses of former President Bill Clinton. For this project, Richard Clark dons multiple hats as he is not only illustrating the story, but writing it as well.

Both my parents instilled in me at an early age the awesome power and incredible wonder of the written word. My father sat with me when I was four years old and taught me to enjoy reading with classic comic strips like SPIDERMAN, PEANUTS, B.C. and, later, CALVIN AND HOBBES. My mother exposed me to such classics of literature as Poe, Tolkien, Stoker and Doyle, and I started my own comic collection with allowance money from mowing lawns. I liked Wolverine before it was cool, I watched as Superman died and returned, and huddled under the covers as I turned the pages of SANDMAN. Reading is like oxygen to me, and all genres and formats are welcome and devoured equally. I am the co-host of The DW and Incredible Jeff Show, CEO of Permian Productions, and a reviewer at Graphic Novel Reporter. I am 34 and live in scenic Saratoga Springs New York, where I haunt coffee shops and dive bars and the best comic shop anywhere, The Comic Depot.
