KICKSTARTER PICK: Personal Space Sci-Fi Web Series

Kickstarter sure has become quite the powerhouse for crowdfunding all sorts of projects. In that respect, it can be quite daunting to peruse the thousands of projects, even within a single category. That is why FanboysInc likes to try and give you our Kickstarter Picks from time to time to key you into cool pledge opportunities that you might have otherwise missed. One of those cool pledge opputunities is PERSONAL SPACE, and as I type this, it only has 56 hours left and counting, and is just shy of its goal.

Producing a web series has become the pet project of many filmmakers, actors and producers, and they can have varying degrees of success. Some are never heard of, lost to the far corners of the internet, but some have a little star power and a great idea and go on to become internet sensations, like Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. Personal Space has the potential to not only produce a compelling and interesting web series, but because of the sheer amount of talent attached to it, also create something special along the way.

KICKSTARTER PICK: Personal Space Sci-Fi Web Series

The cast of Personal Space

Science fiction shows are incredibly fun, mainly because of the fantasy elements that are introduced in a real world setting. This show is no different, chronicling the lives of the crew of a space ship on its way through the far reaches of the galaxy. The twist, though, is that all the “footage” is actually a compelling reality television show back here on Earth, unbeknownst to the crew members involved. Straight from the Kickstarter page, here is the synopsis:

Personal Space tackles themes of isolation, rivalry, and hope in deep space.

Personal Space takes place in an alternate timeline where the American space program has been decades ahead of actual history. Generation ship Overture was launched on a very long journey in 1991 to a distant star. The crew serves in 25 year shifts, with each shift passing the torch to the one after. We’re watching current events aboard the ship unfold in 2016, as the second shift is supposed to take command, while the crew of Overture speak in confidence to the ship’s therapy computer.

The key phrase here is “supposed to.”

Pretty interesting in its own right, the plot thickens when you know who is in this crew. The commander of the second shift is Gail Gartner, played by none other than friend of FanboysInc, Nicki Clyne. You might remember Nicki from her role as Cally on the show Battlestar Galactica. (Hear a really cool interview with Nicki in 2015, only on FanboysInc.) Also part of PERSONAL SPACE is Tahmoh Penikett and Richard Hatch, both also from Battlestar Galactica. Kurt Yaeger (Sons of Anarchy), Sean Persuad (EAP Murder Mystery) and Tim Russ (Star Trek Voyager) will also appear next to an incredible cast of characters in this web series.

With only hours remaining, you can help push this project over the event horizon and reap some amazing rewards. From thanks on IMDB, behind the scenes exclusives, producer credits and even video chats with the cast, any tier of backing will net you some amazing returns. Both my parents instilled in me at an early age the awesome power and incredible wonder of the written word. My father sat with me when I was four years old and taught me to enjoy reading with classic comic strips like SPIDERMAN, PEANUTS, B.C. and, later, CALVIN AND HOBBES. My mother exposed me to such classics of literature as Poe, Tolkien, Stoker and Doyle, and I started my own comic collection with allowance money from mowing lawns. I liked Wolverine before it was cool, I watched as Superman died and returned, and huddled under the covers as I turned the pages of SANDMAN. Reading is like oxygen to me, and all genres and formats are welcome and devoured equally. I am the co-host of The DW and Incredible Jeff Show, CEO of Permian Productions, and a reviewer at Graphic Novel Reporter. I am 34 and live in scenic Saratoga Springs New York, where I haunt coffee shops and dive bars and the best comic shop anywhere, The Comic Depot.
