Kickstarter Pick: Combat Jacks 3 – The Fight Continues!

By Jeff Ayers

For those of you not familiar with Mark McKenna, he has been in the comics game for quite sometime. Just take a look at his Comic Book Data Base webpage! Recently though, he has been branching out into a lot more creator owned properties like his successful child comic series, Banana Tails. He has also come out with two issues of his more adult themed book, Combat Jacks. Now, issue three is ready to go, and it just needs the help of fans like you to make it a reality.

I give so much credit to creators in the comic world that strike out on their own to bring their ideas to life. It is a daunting, and incredible task that is wrought with obstacles to overcome. But with hard work and determination, any creator can gain some amount of success. Mark has already been able to publish the first two issues of this book ,thanks in part to the help from his fans and Kickstarter backers, and there is much more story to tell.

The story follows two squads of space marines, who are summoned to a remote planet to check up on an outpost that hasn’t been responding. What they find there, well, is nothing short of terrifying. At least, if giant mutant pumpkins terrify you, and they should! The marines have to hole up in the infested outpost, and try to fight off the near unstoppable threat. But back on earth, in the past, we see that the angry Jacks were around to mess with some farmers and make them fight for their lives!

For any fan of campy, sci-fi horror, this story has it all and more. Continuing in the story is martial arts and action movie star Cynthia Rothrock, who leads First Squad, and Dorthy Darling, known as DAD to her marines, as the hard-nose sarge in charge of Second Squad. The third installment of Combat Jacks is inked and co-written by McKenna, co-written by Sam Eggleston with pencils by Jason Baroody, colors by Blair Smith, letters by John Hunt and editing by Kim Eggleston.

The rewards for backing this Kickstarter are many and varied, with some chances to get you hands on some incredible art from some amazing artists! Your pledge can also net you exclusive printings of the previous two books, and help fuel the writers and artists to create the fourth and final installment, with the mini-series to be collected in a trade paperback published by IDW in the future. With only slightly more than a week to go as it ends Sept. 22,  head over to the Kickstarter site and join the fight against the Jacks!

Both my parents instilled in me at an early age the awesome power and incredible wonder of the written word. My father sat with me when I was four years old and taught me to enjoy reading with classic comic strips like SPIDERMAN, PEANUTS, B.C. and, later, CALVIN AND HOBBES. My mother exposed me to such classics of literature as Poe, Tolkien, Stoker and Doyle, and I started my own comic collection with allowance money from mowing lawns. I liked Wolverine before it was cool, I watched as Superman died and returned, and huddled under the covers as I turned the pages of SANDMAN. Reading is like oxygen to me, and all genres and formats are welcome and devoured equally. I am the co-host of The DW and Incredible Jeff Show, CEO of Permian Productions, and a reviewer at Graphic Novel Reporter. I am 34 and live in scenic Saratoga Springs New York, where I haunt coffee shops and dive bars and the best comic shop anywhere, The Comic Depot.
