Joe Nubb’s Five Toy Picks of Summer

By Joe NUB

As the summer winds down in August, once referred to as “The Sunday of Months“, I reflect on some of the great toys that have been released into the wild over the last few months. Before you head back to school, or come to the end of your vacation, or take a break from landscaping the house, or whatever; here is a list of five toys that you should add to your collection this summer (in no particular order):

5. The Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Entertainment Earth 5-Pack from Hasbro! This exclusive 6″ boxed set is available now with free shipping, and is worth the price of admission. It features figures from the 2008 break-out comic series, which later became the inspiration for the 2014 box-office-blockbuster-that-could, and will look awesome on your collector’s shelf. Hasbro wisely repainted a few pre-existing figures, but did a good enough job to make them desirable, plus they give us our first comic version of Gamora!

4. Marvel Legends Grim Reaper, Tigershark, and/or Bulldozer from Hasbro! Two ML’s choices in a row?! Dafuq?! If you know me at all, you know I love my Marvel Legends! And these three villains recently included in the Ant-Man wave are a huge shot in the arm of 6″ Avengers characters that we fans have desired for years! Bulldozer was teased two years ago, but sat in Limbo until finding a home in this wave, thus completing the Wrecking Crew foursome. Tigershark is a bulky, and monstrously well done rendition of the classic Sub-Mariner enemy, and finally, Grim Reaper, is just…freaking…awesome! This classic bad guy is a completely new sculpt and the maniacal smile on his face would unnerve even the most stalwart Avenger. Buy just one, or purchase all three, and you will not be disappointed. Great work, Hasbro! Keep it up! (p.s. they all come with parts to build Ultron from the Avengers sequel from this summer!)

3. DC Collectibles New 52 Joker! As the New 52 line winds down before gearing up to the upcoming Icons series, DCC produces one of the coolest 6″ renditions of The Clown Prince of Crime, sculpted by none other than Joe Nubb’s ICE contact, Paul Harding! Ole’ Joker is cool, crazed, and classic; dressed in black and white, and accessorized with a simple kitchen knife and an intent to hurt people. You can find this dangerous figure in your local comic shop.

2. If you’re looking for a fun, inexpensive toy to add to your collection, then look no further than the Toys R Us exclusive Predator “Heat Vision” 3 3/4″ figure from Reaction Toys. Sure you can pick up the regular Predator figure (and you should), but consider adding this awesome bonus to your toy shelf. It captures the essence so perfectly in plastic, while still maintaining the retro look that Reaction is known for.

1. Okay, I lied. I said that this list was in no particular order, but I was definitely saving this bad boy for last. How could I not? If there’s one thing I love these days as much if not more than GI Joe, Star Wars, and Marvel Legends, it’s Transformers. Between the Generations and Masterpiece line, it’s not hard to figure out how, but with this next entry it brings it to another level. Behold the Transformers: Combiner Wars series Devastator! This 18″ tall (a foot and a half!) Decepticon is comprised of six Constructicons that form the mighty gestalt combiner, and was a house hold name if you were a kid in the 1980’s. Hasbro has crushed it with this set, and it sure helps that they released this beast on my birthday (August 1st, in case ya forgot!). Despite it’s size, Devastator, when combined, is super poseable, and is a great homage to the 1985 release. He’s been found at Toy’s R Us’ across the country for weeks now.

So that’s a quick rundown of some cool toys that have been hitting the shelves over the last few months. Start hitting the toy aisles and let me know what you’ve been finding! -NUB
