FRIDAY FANCAST: Who is Scoot McNairy Playing?

By Muuka Muyumba

We now know that Affleck favorite Scoot McNairy will have a role in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but what we don’t know is just who he is playing.

Yesterday, Deadline reported that their sources told them about the role, but could only speculate on who he might be. Warner Brothers has yet to confirm the reports.

Early speculation has been that he might play The Flash, who is reported to have a cameo in Batman v Superman. Reports were that the cameo involved a convenience store robbery thwarted by The Flash, but that this scene would be totally from the perspective of a security camera. That would make you wonder, upon initial reporting, why they would have to cast for the role at all, if it was just a “flash” of an appearance. However, the fact that Barry Allen is a forensic cop may suggest that we see him investigating a crime in the movie.

If he is the Flash, then McNairy would have a multi-picture deal to include Justice League and a rumored Flash/Green Lantern team up movie.

Another report from Latino-Review is suggesting that McNairy might be playing Dick Grayson or Nightwing in the movie. Everything is complete conjecture at the moment.

So let’s switch it up this weekend and consider just who McNairy might be play, if it isn’t The Flash or Nightwing.

I already speculated that he might be someone more villainous, but what do you think?

The Riddler: a classic from Batman’s rogues gallery, I would imagine that McNairy was handpicked by Affleck for a role since they worked together in Argo and will again in Gone Girl. Therefore, the assumption is that McNairy will have the most interaction with Affleck on screen. Maybe we meet Nygma in the beginning of the movie committing a crime and then being vanquished by The Batman. Either way, the character really needs his due in an updated film setting.

The Scarecrow: it may be a bit too soon for this character since he was such a featured player in the previous iteration of the Batman movies, but the Master of Fear is simply a crucial rogue in the gallery. McNairy could really sink his teeth into this role.

The Question: I would love if this character could make his way into the new DC movie universe, but he may be more of a DC TV fixture. The Question is a cruel, dark, and conspiracy-crazed anti-hero who floats around in Batman’s universe. The Question would be an excellent addition to the crew and could introduce a Justice League Dark that could be fodder for future films.

Commissioner Gordon: He would be younger than Batman if this is his role. Gordon is critical to Batman’s legitimacy, but I don’t know how much time we’ll be spending in Gotham. I doubt they would want to cast another actor to confuse this role even more since we get Gotham on Fox this fall.

The Joker: again, this may be too soon and too risky. Anyone who plays the Joker next is in a no win situation because of the indelible mark that Heath Ledger left on this role. However, if anyone could carry that intensity, I think McNairy would be a great addition.

Steve Trevor: this is probably a bit far off, but I think that they need to connect Wonder Woman to this fight in some way and Steve Trevor is her liaison to that world. Trevor is a military man who encourages Diana to help protect “man” as opposed to returning to Themyscira. Trevor is DC’s Agent Coulson.
