FRIDAY FANCAST: Who is your Justice League?

By Muuka Muyumba

With all the rumors that have been swirling about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the roles to be filled, the lineup of the Justice League for the DC Cinematic Universe.

Today, for Fancast, we consider what lineup we will see. Currently, aside from the Holy Trinity and Cyborg that have been cast, speculation is that The Flash has at least a cameo in the film. Some other reports suggest that Aquaman is also part of the film, or at least will be part of Justice League.

A recently stumbled-upon fake script (we reported on it too) was found and was said to include several other heroes and villains from the DCU.

First appearing in The Brave and the Bold #28 (February/March 1960), the Justice League originally featured Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter.  Most people assumed that when Justice League was announced that we would probably have the classic line up for the film. However, a recent interview with writer/producer David S. Goyer, who holds grand sway over the DCU, voiced his dislike of the Martian character, leading many to think that he would be omitted from the current DCU.

The longest-running version of the Justice League was the loosely adapted series called the Super Friends, which ran in various incarnations from 1973 to 1986. Those incarnations featured the Holy Trinity with Robin (for some reason), and later a “galactic” crew including Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkman, Samurai (a Hanna Barbera creation). Robin was a featured player in the Justice League cartoons (unlike the comics) mainly based on his popularity after the Batman ’66 television show.

Teens and kids from the ’90s and ’00s were lucky enough to experience a leap forward with the premiere of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’s Batman: The Animated Series (and later Superman: Animated Adventures), which took these characters and in a different direction from the fluffy Saturday morning “learn-a-lesson” shows. Then Cartoon Network started producing a new Justice League, and subsequent Justice League Unlimited, cartoons based on the designs of Timm. That line up again featured the Holy Trinity with the first cartoon appearances of Hawkgirl, John Stewart, and Martian Manhunter. In way, this was the truest representation of the original comic lineup yet.

Critically lauded, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited weaved intricate serialized stories that had included the most expansive roster of Justice League members and villains, including some lesser known characters like Hawk and Dover, Red Tornado, Black Cat, Power Girl, Booster Gold, and Zatanna.

Another great Justice League cartoon was the underappreciated Young Justice, which could be an inspiration for expansion on the cinematic universe after Justice League the movie comes out.

Today, the New 52 has redesigned the origins and looks of the main characters, and has changed the lineup by including Cyborg, featuring Shazam, and positioning Aquaman as an anti-hero. Many observers believe that this is the lineup that we will see in Batman v Superman, especially since we already know that Cyborg has been cast. The one correction that I would make is to have the new Green Lantern be John Stewart rather than Hal Jordan, just to wash that Ryan Reynoldsy taste of my mouth.

If the New 52 is the model, then do you agree? Do you want to see a different line up? Do you want Martian Manhunter? Hawkgirl?
