CBTVB: Oscar-Winner John Ridley Developing a New Marvel Series for ABC

By Muuka Muyumba

John Ridley, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of 2013 Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave, is reportedy teaming up with Marvel Television to develop a new series for ABC. This new project is not the same reported separate from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff already in development. ABC and Ridley are looking to “reinvent” an existing Marvel superhero character or property.

Ridley is no stranger to comics having written The American Way for Wildstorm/DC back in 2006. He has also written for The Authority and Warblade for DC Comics. He also has written for Justice League and Static Shock cartoons for Warners.

No word on who or what that character or property might be. However, with Disney’s aggressive stance toward diversity, ABC and Marvel may be looking to blind-cast a previously known entity. Misty Knight, Moon Knight, and Cloak & Dagger are some “street-level” heroes who could be ripe for TV development.

Ridley is currently a writer and showrunner for ABC’s critically-acclaimed drama series American Crime which ends its midseason run next month. No word on whether the series will be renewed for next season.
