CBTVB: New Synopsis for A.K.A. Jessica Jones Debuts

By Muuka Muyumba

A new description of the upcoming Marvel Netflix series A.K.A. Jessica Jones has appeared online. Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones is the extension of the Marvel brand on Netflix which has proven to be a smashing creative success, seemingly refreshing Marvel’s properties with a new form of story-telling.

“Ever since her short-lived stint as a Super Hero ended in tragedy, Jessica Jones has been rebuilding her personal life and career as a hot-tempered, sardonic, badass private detective in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. Plagued by self-loathing, and a wicked case of PTSD, Jessica battles demons from within and without, using her extraordinary abilities as an unlikely champion for those in need… especially if they’re willing to cut her a check.”

A.K.A. Jessica Jones has been in production in New York since February and is due to premiere some time this year. The series stars Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, with Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Carrie-Anne Moss as Harper, and David Tennant as her nemisis, Zebediah Kilgrave/The Purple Man.  A purported logo (above) for the show leaked online some time again, but this could simply be a photoshop job.

Anticipation for Jessica Jones has been piqued after the critical and ‘box office’ success of Marvel’s Daredevil.  Daredevil’s grounded approach and long-form storytelling was a revelation to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so question remain just how the gritty nature of Daredevil will impress or inform the creative team behind Jessica Jones.

Ritter is quite a comedic actress, but can bring the serious when needed so I question whether Jessica Jones will feature more humor than Daredevil.  However, the set photos haven’t really given any indication of a lighter feel. It certainly will be interesting to know just how Jessica’s little-seen superpowers will fit into such a grounded universe.
