UPDATE: Marvel officially announces Punisher spin-off with statements:

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Steve Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”

“Marvel’s The Punisher” marks the sixth series ordered thus far as part of the groundbreaking collaboration between Marvel Television and Netflix including the upcoming “Marvel’s Luke Cage,” “Marvel’s Iron Fist,” “Marvel’s The Defenders” and the Peabody Award-winning “Marvel’s Jessica Jones.”

Details are a little scant right now, but Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Marvel will indeed give Frank Castle aka The Punisher his own spin-off on the streaming service. Jon Bernthal will reprise his as writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal, Casualty) will serve as showrunner.

Marvel’s The Punisher adds another ‘hero’ to the pantheon of Netflix and Marvel Television shows, but no word on whether he will factor into the ultimate team up series, The Defenders lineup.

Netflix and Marvel are expected to publicly announce the project later today, but a teaser image has emerged.

Marvel debuted The Punisher in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (February 1974), and the character has continued to have a significant foothold in the popular culture, considering Benthal was the 4th actor to play the anti-hero in that 40 year span. Marvel will continue its Defenders series this September with the premiere of Luke Cage, while Jessica Jones completes a second season, and Iron Fist begins filming. The Defenders saga series is said to start filming this fall.
