CBTVB: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Renewed for Season 3

By Muuka Muyumba

Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team are headed back for a third season on ABC. A move that always made sense since, despite mild ratings, as S.H.I.E.L.D. holds major potential to be a big player for ABC Studios in the syndication market both domestically and overseas.

The idea of renewal is also not that surprising considering that ABC and Marvel have been investigating even more Marvel series, along with renewing Marvel’s Agent Carter.

Most critics have felt that S.H.I.E.L.D. has benefited from moving to 9 pm for a bit more of a serious tone with less reliance on films driving its storylines. However, this has not stopped tie ins like the Theta Protocol and its impact on Age of Ultron and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. That’s not to say that the series isn’t plumbing the world of the Inhumans, but they have been able to craft interesting character development that has been surprising and refreshing. Each character has their own motivations and their goals are not all shared.

The one thing that will benefit the show going forward is creating a spin-off that will allow Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to pare down its regular cast which has become unwieldy of late.

Reports do not have the show moving in ABC’s schedule, so expect to pick back up on Tuesday at 9 pm this fall.
