CBTVB: Marvel Suffers Their First TV Setback with the Cancellation of Agent Carter

By Muuka Muyumba

Marvel has had a pretty decent run at the box office, but is now faced with its most serious challenge after ABC cancelled the limited series Agent Carter. The show’s low ratings likely made a third season cost-prohibitive for ABC considering the series finale in March pulled in just 2.35 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating, which were series lows.

Agent Carter centered around S.S.R., and eventual S.H.I.E.L.D. creator, Margaret “Peggy” Carter as portrayed by Hayley Atwell. Atwell debuted as the character in Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger back in 2010, and spurred the concept of a TV show after Disney president Bob Iger championed a TV series about her ongoing adventures after the apparent death of Captain America (Chris Evans).

Agent Carter was the brain-child of showrunners Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, and was the rare Marvel property to focus on the plight of a woman in the 1940s who was constantly doubted by the men in her life. Many fans and pundits believed that Agent Carter was that rare piece of pulp fiction that not only served the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also was a vehicle for a strong female hero.

Now, Marvel must lick its wounds as they shift focus from Agent Carter to another MCU series, Cloak and Dagger on ABC Family. Marvel TV Studios, as birthed by Marvel producer Jeph Loeb, also has some claim to two Fox/X-Men properties, Legion and Hellfire on other cable companies. However, the loss of Agent Carter is a particular finger in the eye for Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige who had unique control over the show as compared to shows like Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was the baby of Loeb.

[SPOILERS AHEAD] If you’ve seen Captain America: Civil War, you know that Peggy met her inevitable end in that film which helped propel Steve’s desire to save Bucky (Sebastian Stan) from the government powers that be.  We saw future versions of Peggy Carter in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Ant-Man, now we have to wonder when or where we will ever see Peggy Carter again.

Despite this report, I am paritcularly disappointed in this news as Agent Carter was a pleasant respite from the 22-episode slog of the serialization of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. As for the very popular actor Hayley Atwell, she has already lined up another ABC drama called Conviction, which could signal that she won’t ever be too far from the MCU.
