The Following and The Good Wife alum Mike Colter has officially nabbed the role of Luke Cage in Netflix’s superhero series. Colter will make his Marvel universe debut with the recurring role opposite Krysten Ritter in A.K.A. Jessica Jones — the second of four dramas picked up straight to series — before being spun off to topline the Luke Cage show.

He’ll eventually team with Daredevil’s Charlie Cox, Ritter and the uncast Iron Fist in mini The Defenders to conclude all four stories. Twilight’s Melissa Rosenberg will oversee Jessica Jones.

Luke Cage, a.k.a. Powerman, made his first appearance in his own series, Luke Cage, Hero for Hire, in June 1972. Luke Cage possesses superhuman strength and stamina, and has extremely dense skin and muscle tissue which render him highly resistant to physical injury. Cage possesses these abilities as a result of a cellular regeneration experiment which fortified the various tissues of his body. His skin can resist high caliber bullets, puncture wounds, corrosives, and extreme temperatures and pressures without sustaining damage.  The character was later part of a Hero for Hire detective agency in the Ultimates universe and became ensnared with Jessica Jones in a professional and personal relationship that resulted in them having a baby and getting married. So his involvement in the Defenders series becomes obvious as Marvel turns its focus to their street-level heroes in the Netflix series.

Luke Cage is set to be the 3rd solo series released in the chronology on Netflix to be followed by Iron Fist and The Defenders special event series. The question left lingering by the announcement of the series, and the eventual contractual expiration of the movie Avengers, is whether this is the start of the New Avengers, as the Hell’s Kitchen heroes will eventually save lives outside of New York.

Luke Cage should start filming at the end of 2015.
