CBTVB: Marvel and Fox Working Out TV Deal to Bring X-Men to Small Screen

By Muuka Muyumba

Today, during the Fox TCAs, executives announced that they were in conversation with Marvel to bring an X-Men series to TV. Fox is said to have this X-Men series at the top of their development slate, but the details have to be worked out with Marvel who must have rights to several characters on TV.  Whatever happens, Fox will try to tie their series into the film world in a similar fashion to Marvel’s TV world.

Fox’s TV prexy Dana Walden reported that showrunners Evan Katz and Manny Coto as well as J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3) had been working on an X-Men TV series adaptation at 20th TV, which “will be a long-running series,” according to Walden.

The series is also expected to feature familiar characters from the comic books and the movies though some of the top commodities, like Wolverine, are expected to stay exclusive to features.

One very shaky rumor is that the deal may entail access to the Fantastic Four, who Marvel covet to bring back into the fold in a similar agreement as their Spider-Man deal with Sony. Marvel is rumored to want the Fantastic Four for Infinity War. Now this is could be completely scurrilous, but with the negative reception to the new Fantastic Four, and Fox’s apparent ignorance of what to do with them now, it doesn’t sounds completely out of left field.

If Fantastic Four also fails financially, as they have done creatively, the question remains whether they will get a new life either on its own or in another franchise like X-Men, or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Right now, there is no word on when an X-Men show would and could fit into Fox’s schedule.
