CBTVB: FXX Working with Donald Glover on a Deadpool Animated Series

By Muuka Muyumba

First, Deadpool scooped up Atlanta star Zazie Beets to play Domino, and now Atlanta creators Donald and Stephen Glover will reportedly develop an ‘adult’ animated series on Marvel’s Deadpool, according to several outlets.

Donald Glover is on quite a roll after developing the artful Atlanta which told the fictional story of Earnest, a young Ivy League refugee who languishes in his hometown looking for purpose…and money. Glover was rewarded with Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe win for best actor in a comedy. Then, Disney plucked him up to play a young Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo anthology movie, and to voice Simba in the Lion King live-action film. Glover even has an upcoming role in the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie on July 7th.

Glover has been involved with an animated Marvel TV series before. He also got to voice the animated version of Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series on Disney XD after several fans online clamored for Glover to play Peter Parker before Sony hired Andrew Garfield.

The Glovers will develop the show for straight-to-series order with a 10-episode first season to debut in 2018. Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory are executive producers much like they are on FX’s Marvel series Legion.

“How much more fun could this be? Deadpool, Donald and FX – the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth,” Loeb said. “We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with ‘Legion’ continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”

Marvel and Glover are no dummies, considering that Fox’s Deadpool film was a $58 million movie that went on to gross almost $800 million in the theaters. One major thing the film had going for it was its hard R-rating. Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, did not shy away from being crass, and you have to assume that FXX won’t shy away either.

No word in the report as to whether Reynolds will return to voice the animated character. The character appeared in animated form in the direct-to-video Hulk Vs. in 2009 and was voiced by Nolan North. Later, Will Friedle played Deadpool in 2 episodes of the Ultimate Spider-Man series.
