By Muuka Muyumba

In a bit of stunning news on a Friday, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Chuck actor Zachary Levi has been cast as the man-child superhero Shazam in the upcoming film from DC Entertainment and New Line Cinema. Shazam will be part of the DC film series, but we have yet to know whether he will appear in any upcoming Justice League movies. However, we do see the character show up in the introductory logo for the DC films.

Levi is best known as the lead in the TV genre series Chuck about a nerd with the internet implanted in his brain. Levi made a splash at Disney with his voicing of Flynn Rider in the Tangled animated movie. He also took over for Josh Dallas in the Thor series as one of the warriors three Fandral.

David F. Sandberg will direct the film for New Line.

Levi is a very likeable actor who has also built a serious fanboy and girl fans through his Nerd HQ charity. The organization went for a charity comic-con panel to a show on SyFy this past summer.

The hero known as Shazam was originally called Captain Marvel in Fawcett Comics, licensed in 1972 to DC Comics, and ultimately, in 1991, DC Comics acquired all the rights. He has the power of the gods (acronym of six “immortal elders”: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury) imbued by the wizard Shazam giving him abilities on par with Superman. However, Shazam has the alter ego of a 13-year old boy named Billy Batson who transforms into a brick of muscle who can fly.

In 1941, Fawcett licensed the hero for cinematic serials, and later in the ’70s was brought to the small screen in a Saturday morning series. Levi will eventually be pitted against Dwayne Johnson, who will play Shazam’s nemesis Black Adam, at some point. In July , David F. Sandberg (Annabelle Creation) will direct the film from a script from Henry Gayden. The film is set to start production in 2018 with a chance to hit theaters in 2019.
