CBMB: Will Dwayne Johnson Finally Get his Shot at a Superhero?

By Muuka Muyumba

In the storm of promotion for his upcoming film, Hercules, which is based on the Radical Comic of the same name, Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, acknowledged that he is circling a superhero project with WB and DC.

Johnson spoke with Total Film and saying that they (he and WB/DC) would be announcing a role in the pantheon that he would play very soon who has the power of Superman, adding in a very coy manner, that all we had to do was “just say the word”.

Most assume, quite reasonably, that Johnson will take on the mantle of Shazam in the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe. Johnson has long circled this project as both a hero and the villain, but appears to have settled with DC on playing the titular role.

I believe that Shazam has incredible potential as a franchise within a franchise, IF, you position it just right. This could be a Harry Potter franchise with the DC universe. It also could make the character much more popular than it has ever been.

Shazam is based on the old Fawcett character who is as old as Batman and Superman, and was later acquired by DC after Fawcett Comics folded. Shazam is essentially about a homeless boy who is the “chosen one” with transformative superpowers of the gods bestowed upon him by an ancient wizard. Sound familiar?

Billy Batson could be a Potteresque role for the kid they chose, and Shazam could be an Iron-Man like role for The Rock because so much of the role will be about ego and persona. The Rock acknowledges being the baddest dude with a superhero build, but he is also a fanboy trapped in that same body. Shazam should be a great role for most leading men (interested in a superhero role) because its about Superman with the soul of a 13 year old boy. An incredible premise.Where Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may rely on the same “realism” we saw in Man of Steel, Shazam will be a severe departure because it should be about magic, humor, immaturity, and fear. Batman will be seasoned and Superman looks just as serious, but Shazam will be unique once (and if) he joins the Justice League because he is essentially hiding who he is. These other DC figures may have to deal with the realization that one of the most powerful of them is actually a 13 year old kid!

I just love the potential of this concept and I can’t understand why it hasn’t been made yet.
