CBMB: Whedon Exits Nascent Batgirl Project

By Muuka Muyumba

Avengers and Justice League director Joss Whedon is moving on from his commitment to the Batgirl solo film that has been under development at Warner Brothers in the DC Films wing. The project apparently only came into being once Whedon expressed a desire to write and direct the film.

However, I’m starting to wonder whether his involvement in the Batgirl movie was only an excuse for Warner Bros to bring Whedon into their sphere. His presence in the DC Films family made it a bit easier to justify Whedon then taking over for a fired Zack Snyder from the troubled Justice League movie.

Maybe Batgirl wasn’t even a fully-formed idea considering that Whedon recently stated that he hadn’t even come up on a viable story after a full year in development. A more likely scenario is that WB, as well as other studios, are now recognizing diversity can be a major selling point. Therefore, Whedon’s exit could be eased by the idea of a female writer/director coming on to the project.

So far, novelists and comics writers like Gail Simone, Roxane Gay, and Hope Larson have all expressed a desire to give voice to their pitches for the character of Barbara Gordon.

Batgirl may have been a pipedream, but there was enough online interest that DC films should seriously reconsider bringing this vision into fruition.
