CBMB: Warners Shifts Sandman to New Line Along with Justice League Dark

By Muuka Muyumba

Sandman is leaving Warner Bros, and moving to New Line Cinema as part of a larger reassignment of DC Comics/Vertigo character films like Shazam (which was already established at the company) as well Justice League Dark.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt picked up Sandman as the writer and star of the film based on the re-imaging of the Silver Age hero that came back in the public consciousness in the 1990 under Neil Gaiman’s guidance.

Fellow Vertigo imprints include iZombie, Constantine aka Hellblazer, and other darker comic characters like Deadman and Doom Patrol.

The news that Justice League Dark is moving to New Line as well is somewhat surprising as the project now shifts focus from writer/director Guillermo del Toro, to a new creative team to head up the film. Now known as Dark Universe, the film will feature supernatural heroes such as Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, and Deadman as they take on dark threats to the known world. No word on whether the Dark Universe will crossover into the Justice League world that Warner Bros is working to establish starting with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March 2016.

The move certainly gives Warners a new wing to push its lesser known titles to the theater. However, the report does not tell us when these films will appear on Warner Bros’s slate of upcoming films.
