CBMB: Warner Bros Teases its Upcoming Slate of DC Entertainment Films

By Muuka Muyumba

At San Diego Comic-Con, DC Entertainment previewed some previously unannounced films in the lead-up to the Justice League panel. Hall H again unfurled a massive room-spanning screen that showed off the DC Entertainment logo that was first seen in front of Wonder Woman.

Then the logo shot turned into a preview of title logos for Flashpoint (!), Batgirl, Suicide Squad 2, Justice League Dark, Green Lantern Corps, and Wonder Woman 2.

Flashpoint was the most head-scratching title of the new films as this would replace the Flash solo film, but likely retool the whole DC Extended Universe. Flashpoint seems to be a bit of a stretch for a solo film considering that would be our real introduction to the film version of Barry Allen (Ezra Miller). In the comics, Flashpoint tells the story of Barry making a mistake in trying to save his mother from a murder that set him on the course to become The Flash. Barry alters his timeline and inadvertently returning his world to a war between the Amazonians and the Atlanteans. Flash has to ask for the aid of the smartest hero on the planet to get him back to his timeline. Barry stumbles upon Batman who in this alt-world is Thomas Wayne who grieves for his murdered son Bruce.

Did you get all that? We have to wonder just how the comics will influence the introductory story of Barry as The Flash.

Batgirl has already made some news this weekend as DC Entertainment Chief and Warner Bros producer Geoff Johns has said that development on the film will start next year once director Joss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers) is done with clean up on Justice League.

Suicide Squad 2 is reportedly going to have Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) as the new director for the film, but no other announcements have been made about who will make up the team.

Justice League Dark is once again looking for a director with It director Andy Muschetti possibly filling that role, and will feature John Constantine and a band of mystical heroes.

Green Lantern Corps remains on DC’s slate though no news has been revealed on this film since it was announced back in 2015.

Finally, Wonder Woman 2 is on course for a possible 2020 release with Patty Jenkins and Johns working on a script that could focus on communism in the post-World War II universe.

Aside from those announcements today, DC is reportedly working on The Batman, a noir detective story with Matt Reeves set to direct (for now) and Ben Affleck insisting that he will be Batman in that film (for now) despite rumors of his desire to leave the role.

Rumors have also been rampant that a Harley v Joker film is in the works along with Gotham City Sirens from director David Ayer and starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
