CBMB: Viola Davis Confirms her Role as Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad

By Muuka Muyumba

NerdReport.com‘s Fred Topel spoke Oscar-nominee Viola Davis, who portrays a U.S. agent working with China to stop cyberterrorism in Blackhat, the new Michael Mann thriller. After discussing Blackhat, they talked about her involvement with Suicide Squad, a scheduled film in the DC movie universe that sees a collection of classic DC villains strong-armed into doing the government’s bidding in black ops across the globe.

After the star-studded cast was announced, speculation turned to who would play Amanda Waller, the naefrious government agent tasked with forcing these baddies to do “good”. Popular scoop site Latino Review reported that Davis was the front-runner for the role.

Davis told Topel that she is still working it out her schedule and has not begun reading comic books for research yet. Davis is a particularly busy actor these days with a variety of film roles and a hit television series (How to Get Away with Murder), currently in a mid-season break. Topel observed that she “clearly loves” Waller, as she describes herself as “fascinated by her”. Davis said she was “…fascinated by [Waller] in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”

Questions remain whether we will see Waller beyond Suicide Squad, but at least this report confirms that Davis is getting geared up for the role.

Suicide Squad will be released August 5, 2016.
