4-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams is reportedly circling a role in the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off movie Venom for Sony Pictures. According to a report from Variety, Williams is currently in negotiations with Sony over the scope of her contract for the role. However, The studio has already made it clear that Venom will play no part in the Spider-Man universe, and that the film will stand on its own.

Sources say Williams would play a district attorney and possibly Hardy’s love interest who initially does not have a comic book corollary.

Acclaimed indie actor and comedian Jenny Slate (Parks and Recreation) has also booked a role in the upcoming Venom film where she is rumored to be playing a scientist with a hand in creating the venom symbiote. Nerdist posits that Slate’s character may be a variation on scientific characters from Brian Michael Bendis’s Ultimate Spider-Man run in the comics.

Williams and Slate join star Tom Hardy who will play Eddie Brock along with Riz Ahmed who is rumored to be playing Carnage. Fanboys and girls guess that Carnage will be the big bad and Venom must protect the city his worst version. It is clear that Venom has accrued an extraordinary cast of dramatic actors for a film that may not necessarily be a franchise starter. The film is rumored to be going for an R-rated horror thriller vibe that can stand on its own within the comic book superhero genre ala Logan.

Ruben Fleischer is directing with Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower) have written the script for the movie with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing alongside Amy Pascal. Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing the project for Columbia Pictures.

Venom is set to hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018.
