“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” said Joe. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.” Directors Joe and Anthony Russo talked to HuffPo about their creative approach to Infinity War during promotion for the home-video release of Captain America: Civil War.

So, could we see some version of The Nomad in Infinity War? The Nomad was created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Sal Buscema as an alternate identity for the original Captain America after he becomes disillusioned with the U.S. government in Captain America #180 (December 1974). Cap discovers that a high ranking government official (likely a comics version of Richard Nixon) is the leader of a terrorist organization known as the Secret Empire.

The first half of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War could be Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) plucking Steve from the obscurity of masked vigilantism to come back to the Avengers. Just have to wonder whether Steve or the media will be using that Nomad tag as a hero handle.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.
