CBMB: Suicide Squad Big Bad(s) Revealed?

By Muuka Muyumba

Suicide Squad trailer debuted last night and the dissection continues of all the Easter eggs. One thing that leaped off the screen was one sequence that shows a Midway City in turmoil after some sort of creature or apparition that is bringing down planes and threatening the subway.

The intrepid site Heroic Hollywood has posited that Common’s character, who hasn’t been seen in any Suicide Squad promotions so far, is the one who is doing all the damage. Common has been seen on set of Suicide Squad with several tattoos all over him leading many to speculate that he is playing the DC Comics villain The Tattooed Man. In the comics, The Tattooed Man is a Green Lantern villain who’s tattoos manifest themselves as actual objects that he is able to conjure. The character has had a few iterations in DC Comics based on the original creation from Gardner Fox and Gil Kane, first appearing in September 1963.

Now, there has been no confirmation that Common is actually playing this character, but if he is, then the level of destruction inflicted on the city the Suicide Squad must save seems a bit incongruent with the descriptions of his powers from various websites. Add that to the fact that most scoopers are suggesting that the actual big bad of the Suicide Squad is The Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), leads me to believe that The Enchantress and The Tattooed Man somehow come into contact to heighten his power to extinction level status.

The exponential increase of The Tattooed Man’s power may also suggest that he could become an actual threat to a Green Lantern. The other interesting note is that these events are taking place in the fictional Midway City which is the home of the Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl, which could suggest even more ancient magic in play. It should be very interesting to see how the mostly terrestrial Suicide Squad can handle such a mystical opponent.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
