CBMB: Sony Considering Female-Led Superheroes

By Muuka Muyumba

Deadline is reporting that Sony is panicking after all and is doing a top-to-bottom revamp of its most important property, the Spider-verse, insiders say. Deadline noted that among the many plans is a female superhero movie which is being eyed for a 2017 release date.

Sinister Six, the next installment from writer-director Drew Goddard, was announced in April and its release date, November 11, 2016, was revealed during this year’s Comic-Con.

Deadline also reports that Sony has hired writer Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) to write their script with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach still producing. The Spider-verse includes several strong female characters like Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestar and Spider-Woman.

This move also signals that Sony is planning on “retooling” The Amazing Spider-Man as well even after they announced pushing it back to 2018. Deadline believes that the executives at Sony are bowing to pressure after this latest Spider-Man movie saw its smallest domestic box office take ever. Questions remain whether the creative team behind the first two films will return, especially after writing team, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzmann have split up.

So in a strange way, the death of Spider-Man is being predicted although a female hero may still be in the works. Even if the Spider-Man doesn’t die, they won’t delay release of a film with the character in the title for fear of it reverting back to Marvel. However, Sony may be ahead of the curve by getting the word out about a a female-led superhero film.

Marvel Studios is being coy (as they are with everything) about bringing a female-led film to the screen even though they may have the most bankable star, aside from Jennifer Lawrence in a superheroine suit in Scarlett Johansson. Speaking of Lawrence, Fox has not stated any intent on branching the X-Men franchise for a solo lady-hero show though Oscar-winner Lawrence is an obvious choice with her Hunger Games history.  For that matter, Fox has never done a solo film for any other character aside from Wolverine, even though they’ve had another two other female Oscar-winners in their stable for years (Halle Berry and Anna Paquin). Fox choosing a female hero would be a bold move for them.

One has to wonder whether the movie production clause applies to other characters in the Spider-verse, meaning that Sony could allow Spider-Man gestate for a few years while kicking in Sony’s rights by using a Spider-Man villain or heroine. Still the possibility of a female-led comic hero movie is appealing and everyone with a comic character is champing at the bit to get one done.

Who will be first?!
