CBMB: Simon Kinberg Discusses Gambit’s Continuing Development

By Muuka Muyumba

Gambit is apparently still slated for the Fox Marvelverse, but things continue to gestate with a production that has seen many difficulties in landing a director for a script, which seems to be in flux. Collider recently sat down with X-Men executive and writer Simon Kinberg to test the wind on the future of the production.

Kinberg acknowledged that they are nearing another choice for the director after Rupert Wyatt left the film. Rumors have been running rampant that Bourne Identity director Doug Liman is the next man up for the film, which has been described as a “sexy thriller” heist film.

Not only is Fox hoping for a connected universe for its Marvel films ala Marvel Studios, but they are also looking to focus production around a genre of films as Marvel president Kevin Feige so strongly imprinted on his movie universe.

Kinberg went on to note that the production team, including star Channing Tatum, his producing partner Reid Carolin, screenwriter Joshua Zetumer, and the director working on the script with the hope to start shooting next spring. The new shooting schedule would suggest that the film could end up pushed back from October 2016, possibly to the following spring.

What’s apparent is that Kinberg remains committed to Gambit as a he has been for the failed Fantastic Four franchise, but questions remain about any future X-Men film beyond Deadpool that hits theaters in February of 2016.
