CBMB: Rupert Wyatt To Direct Fox’s ‘Gambit’ X-Men Film

By Muuka Muyumba

According to EW, 20th Century Fox has hired Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Gambler) to direct the upcoming Channing Tatum vehicle.

Gambit will be the second solo X-Men series to kick off in 2016 after Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, premieres in February of that year. Tatum will star as Remy LeBeau aka Gambit, the larcenous mutant with the ability to infuse kinetic energy into any object, and turning that object into an explosive weapon. Gambit came to popularity in the ’90s with the X-Men cartoon for Fox that saw him as a rogue anti-hero who was reluctant to dip his toe all the way in and become a virtuous hero. Gambit was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee. Drawn by artist Mike Collins, Gambit makes his full first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #266 (August 1990).

Speaking of rogues, he is also known for his lusty relationship with the character Rogue who shared some of his Southern roots, but falls for the cad every time. Gambit has already been seen on the big screen as played by Taylor Kitsch in the critically reviled X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which almost killed off the X-Men franchise altogether before director Matthew Vaughn resurrected with X-Men: First Class.

If Wyatt sticks with the project all the way through, he will have finalized an agonizing few months for the production team of Reid Carolin, Lauren Schuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg, who have been offering the project to just about anyone with feature experience. This is a bit of an exaggeration, but names like Darren Aronovsky, Bennett Miller, as well as Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been bandied about to direct. Despite this arduous journey in the valley of nos, Fox appears to have scooped up a talented guy to head their film.

Gambit is set for release on October 7, 2016.
