By Muuka Muyumba

In an interview with the Nerdist podcast, and host Chris Hardwick, Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ex-Machina) talked about the infamous Entertainment Weekly photo of him as Apocalypse was tinted to look purple. Many folks on the internet were unhappy with his look saying that he looked more closely to a villain from Power Rangers, Ivan Ooze.

To start he said that he was constantly enveloped in latex with a cooling system under his suit. Isaac noted that the lighting on set had a purple hue and said that everyone else in the photo Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp) also had a similar tint.

He went on the describe the look of his villain as based on that of his X-Men: Evolution animated version. In that show, Apocalypse was more classic gray and blue.

The talk also touched on the motivations of the character which Isaac described as a bit more messianic. Isaac talked about his family’s evangelical past and his experiences in the church. said that Apocalypse awakens and is not pleased with the state of mutant-kind, as Jesus is said to be in Evangelical teachings of the Bible.

Isaac, talking about Apocalypse, says that “[h]e wakes up and he’s like ‘oh, no it wasn’t supposed to be like this…you guys are in trouble’.” Apocalypse’s duty is to “cull the herd” and bring the world back to “consciousness”, possibly meaning that Mutant superiority should be preserved in spite of the human race at a level to put Magneto to shame.

X-Men: Apocalypse wrapped principal photography on August 23, 2015, and hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
