CBMB: New Details Emerge of Marvel’s Plans for Thor and Guardians Sequels

By Muuka Muyumba

Just last week, we received confirmation from Marvel on the cast of the upcoming third Thor solo film, Ragnarok. After the revelation of the cast, which includes new Thor family-members Cate Blanchett as Hela, Karl Urban as Skurge, Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster, and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, many fanboys and fangirls surmised that we’d get a deep dive into Asgardian lore.

However, now details have emerged that we won’t just get Asgardian lore, but we will get a clearer link between that lore and the Marvel cosmic universe shared with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thor: Ragnarok will be Chris Hemsworth’s return to the Asgardian god since Avengers: Age of Ultron in summer 2015. Hemsworth is joined by returning stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, as well as the Warriors Three, Zachary Levi as Fandral, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, and Tadanubo Asano as Hogun.

Mark Ruffalo joins the cast as Bruce Banner aka The Incredible Hulk, and based on the description of a story breakdown from JoBlo we will FINALLY see those Planet Hulk rumors come true. JoBlo reports that Planet Hulk will mesh with Ragnarok as Thor searches for Hulk on an as yet unknown planet where Hulk is in gladiator games run by Goldblum’s Grandmaster, who is also known to be the brother of the Guardians’ the Collector (Benecio Del Toro).

The report also notes that Hulk is likely to don armor similar to that from the comics. Thor’s mission to find Banner is reported to include the search for a mystical weapon to help stop Ragnarok.

Speaking of new looks, Thor is said to be sporting a shaved head through some of the film, and Thompson’s Valkyrie will be wearing some kind of ‘war pain’ on her face, which is very different than her Nordic look in the comics.

As we saw in Thor: The Dark World’s end credit scene, Thor and the Asgardians are the closest connection the Avengers have to the Guardians of the Galaxy. JoBlo is reporting that Elizabeth Debicki will be playing the main villain of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

Marvel and writer/director James Gunn are digging deep into that cosmic lore by casting Debicki as the little-known character named Ayesha. The character has also been known as Kismet or Paragon, and her significance is that she was created by a group called The Enclave, a group dedicated to taking control of the world, and also responsible for the creation of Adam Warlock.

Warlock has been a character that many have been clamoring for since before Guardians 1 ever premiered. Now, we may have a clearer connection between the cosmic hero and Guardians than ever before.

Little is known about the details of the story for Guardians 2, but Chris Pratt returns as Starlord with Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Deisel as Groot, and Michael Rooker as Yondu. Kurt Russell is also a newcomer to the series potentially as Starlord’s long-lost father.

We will see Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017, and Thor: Ragnarok is slated for theaters on November 3, 2017,
