CBMB: What Other MCU Characters Can We Expect in Ant-Man?

POTENTIAL SPOILERS

Latino-Review is running a report that Marvel’s Ant-Man script includes many other MCU roles from other features. El Mayimbe’s crew alleges that in an earlier drafts of the first act prologue, Hank Pym has a meeting at S.H.I.E.L.D (apparently at some time in the 50s or 60s) and meets up with Howard Stark, Peggy Carter, Armin Zola, and here is a cool one a young Alexander Pierce(!).

We don’t know from the report whether this was Joe Cornish‘s final version of the script before he and original director Edgar Wright left the project. Remember the original Ant-Man script was done some time before the release of Iron Man 2 in 2010, so as long as Ant-Man went unfilmed, the more Marvel movie myth they had to cram into the script to remain relevant in the MCU. Wright’s exit may have been cemented when Joss Whedon chose a Stark-invented Ultron for the Avengers sequel’s baddie. Adam McKay has since done a pass on the script while Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari are currently on set doing production rewrites.

Peyton Reed is now directing the film which is taking shape as a comedic take on a sci-fi thriller/heist film. What we do know is that an audio version of the Comic-Con teaser leaked shortly after the event, and revealed a little bit about what Dr. Pym thinks of so-called superheroes. He thinks they are farcical. Pym believes in science that can bring about peace in the world.

So, the potential scene of young Pym meeting with S.H.I.E.L.D. (and a yet-to-be-revealed HYDRA) would be intriguing (if it happens at all) because Zola and Pierce would have clear motivations to pluck Pym’s science for evil purposes. Question is, just what would S.H.I.E.L.D. do with this technology if they got their hands on it. Ultimately, S.H.I.E.L.D. was HYDRA and vice versa, so Pym would be the one peacenik who got it right.

So does Ant-Man begin with Pym basking in the glow of “I-told-you-so” smugness when S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA both fall during the Winter Soldier saga? Someone misappropriates the Ant-Man suit because Paul Rudd‘s character, Scott Lang, is tasked by Michael Douglas‘ Hank Pym with stealing back the suit (as we can tell from the audio leak). Who takes the suit? Possibly Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), a begrudged former mentee of Pym’s, who goes on to become Yellowjacket. Maybe its a HYDRA ring still in operation?

Marvel is in the unenviable position of having to work Pym and his technology into the 10-film history of the MCU, as well as explain where he has been since the 50s and 60s.

Ant-Man is scheduled for release one 77 days after Avengers: Age of Ultron on July 17, 2015. Age of Ultron has already wrapped production, whereas Ant-Man is about 2 and a half weeks into its schedule.  We won’t even consider how they are going to get this movie done and post-production completed by that time…that’s another separate article.
