CBMB: Marvel’s Spider-Man Looking to Another Oscar Winner to be Aunt May?

By Muuka Muyumba

TheWrap.com is reporting that their sources tell them that Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei is closing in on the Aunt May role for the upcoming Spider-Man standalone film set for 2017. The report may suggest even more strongly that Marvel and Sony are looking to set key players in their new series of wall-crawling films, possibly to tease the audience with a look at his world in Captain America: Civil War which continues to film in Atlanta.

Fellow Oscar-winner Sally Field played Aunt May in the Amazing Spider-Man sequels. Veteran British actress Rosemary Harris had the role during Tobey Maguire run as the hero in the early 2000s. Tomei certainly doesn’t fit the typical desciption of the 60-something actress, but is an interesting choice for New York authenticity to the role and is more in-line with the Ultimate universe Aunt May who was gray-haired but no elderly woman. Tomei is only 50 years old and does not share the looks of the classic Aunt May.

Before the agreement with Marvel, Sony had toyed briefly with the wild idea of an Aunt May standalone film to further expand their brand. Luckily, the Sony Hack and leak of emails showed just how crazy an idea can sound when said out loud, and Sony instead agreed to have Spider-Man return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and be rebooted.

Tomei and a future Kingpin, Vincent D’Onofrio in Happy Accidents.

Tomei is best known for her Oscar winning role in My Cousin Vinny, but has carved out an extensive body of work in mainstream films like Wild Hogs and Crazy, Stupid, Love, and smaller independent films like The Ides of March, Happy Accidents, or The Wrestler in those 23 years. No comments from Marvel, Sony, or her representatives.

Cop Car helmer Jon Watts will direct the new standalone Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland that is slated to open July 28, 2017.
