CBMB: Marvel’s Shortlist of Captain Marvel Directors Revealed
By Muuka Muyumba
Marvel has narrowed its search for a director of its first female-led superhero film. Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria are the top finalists for the upcoming Brie Larson film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Marvel is playing catch-up with the female-led and female-directed Wonder Woman, which hits theaters in June 2017.
Caro burst onto the scene with her Oscar-nominated film Whale Rider, and must have curried some favor from Disney after she directed the little-seen, but critically-loved McFarland, USA. Caro could join fellow Kiwi Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnorak) as a director in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Glatter is a prominent TV director who has done work for several Emmy-award-level shows like Mad Men, Homeland, Ray Donovan, The Leftovers, and The Walking Dead. Glatter was nominated for a short film Oscar back in 1985 for the film Tales of Meeting and Parting.
Finally, Scafaria is known for smaller films like Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and Coherence. Scafaria also has some TV chops having directed 3 episodes of Fox’s New Girl.
Larson is set to headline Captain Marvel, which will be based on a script from Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman. Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 9, 2019.
