CBMB: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Breaks the Bank

By Muuka Muyumba

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy sets a new August record in its debut this past weekend by earning an estimated $94 million. Guardians beat a record set by Bourne Ultimatum (2007) which previously established the record with $69 million. Guardians is now the 3rd highest grossing movie of 2014 in its opening weekend behind Transformers 4 ($100M), and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95M).

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Obliterates August Record

Director/writer James Gunn (Slither) now may get to punch his ticket for any project he wants in the future, but for now (besides enjoying the fruits of this labor this weekend), he is preparing for a Guardians sequel set for July 28, 2017. Reports have come out that Gunn has also discussed doing a Thunderbolts movie with Marvel President Kevin Feige, but that may be well down the road.

Gunn obviously played a large role in the success of the movie, but many have pointed out how this movie might not have been what it is without the excellent Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. Saldana is the steady voice of reason in the film among the heroes, but a bit too close to things because Ronan and her father are in cahoots. Pratt is a wacky lead, but determined thief who, like the rest of his compatriots, is attempting to do something good for the first time in his life.

A relatable heroic journey of redemption, crackling humor, and spectacular special effects have bred good word-of-mouth (An “A” from CinemaScore), and excellent critical response. Another phenomenon of this film has been the reports of multiple viewings that I may also do myself since my 4-year-old daughter wants to see it. Don’t know if she can make it through, but it will be a great excuse to see it again.

Guardians will have a solid week run to enjoy the spotlight before they face a challenge from the rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which debuts on August 8, 2014.
