CBMB: Marvel Wants Ava DuVernay to Direct Phase 3 Film

By Muuka Muyumba

TheWrap is reporting that Marvel is courting Selma director Ava DuVernay to direct one of their upcoming films. The report has them interested in having her on either Captain Marvel, and more likely, Black Panther, which is due out first in July of 2018.

The report comes on the heels of the American Civil Liberties Union asking state and federal agencies to investigate Hollywood’s hiring practices at major studios. The ACLU has alleged rampant and intentional gender discrimination in recruiting and hiring female directors.

Many believed that DuVernay was a major snub when the Academy announced the nominees for Best Director for this past spring’s award ceremony. The suggestion that DuVernay is a major candidate for Marvel is especially intriguing due to her long history in various aspects of the film industry, not just as a director. She has also been a writer, producer, and publicity consultant for several movies, including 2004’s Spider-Man 2.

If DuVernay gets the gig, she will be Marvel’s first female director to fulfill the role. Marvel had previously hired Patty Jenkins to helm Thor: The Dark World, but she left due to creative difference. Oddly enough, Jenkins has been tapped to lead DC/Warners 2017 Wonder Woman feature, only after previous director Michelle MacLaren left that project due to the dreaded “creative differences.”

Marvel’s Black Panther is set to hit theaters on July 6, 2018, while Marvel’s Captain Marvel will follow in November 2018.
