CBMB: Marvel Studios Apparently Regained the Rights to Fantastic Four (RUMOR)

By Muuka Muyumba

Yesterday, it was officially announced that Marvel TV and Fox were partnering together to bring to X-Men properties, Legion and Hellfire, to Fox broadcast TV and FX respectively. Now a rumor has emerged, started by Den of Geek, but also confirming earlier reports, that Marvel Studios has reacquired the film rights to Fantastic Four. Going one step further, Marvel has also already reportedly slated at least one Fantastic Four film into those new 2020 dates they announced last week.

Back in the 1990s, Marvel sold off its intellectual property in the Fantastic Four in an effort to save themselves from bankruptcy. ¬†Fox has made a couple of attempts at creating a long-lifed franchise, first in the mid-2000s with Tim Story’s films, but the critical and fan reactions were never where Fox needed them. Then just this year, Fox flamed out with the Josh Trank version of the series, which was again derided by fans and critics alike. Fox would have had to keep making these films to keep the IP from reverting back to Marvel and Disney.

Now, Marvel appears to have finagled its way back into the Fantastic Four world much like it did with Sony’s Spider-Man, by seeing a weakness and negotiating its way back into the picture. This will be huge for fans and big for Marvel Studios who continues to work hard at bringing home all of its IP.

All of this is completely unconfirmed, but again, this is the second time this major rumor has been reported widely by scooper sites. Where there’s smoke, there is usually fire, especially when master negotiator Kevin Feige is involved.
