CBMB: Marvel May be Considering Another Oscar-Winner for Major Role in Thor 3

By Muuka Muyumba

With rumors continuing to percolate that Thor: Ragnorak is set to break at least 2 new female characters, a rumor has sprung up online that one of those roles could be for two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett.

Many reports have Marvel searching for talented women to fill the roles of Amora the Enchantress, Hela, or Valkyrie, all Asgardian figures crucial to the historical mystique of Thor.

Blanchett’s possible involvement may be a bit overstated, but considering Marvel’s track record with finding Oscar-worthy talent to play in their pool doesn’t seem like a stretch. However, Blanchett is an Australian (the film is shooting in the star’s home country), has worked in a major genre franchise before (The Tolkien films), and seems like a good sport (consider her uncredited turn in Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz).

Also, of the many characters featured in their films, Marvel has typically had an Oscar-winner or nominee included in each cast. Nominee Robert Downey, Jr. versus winner Jeff Bridges in Iron Man; winners Anthony Hopkins in Thor, Tommy Lee Jones in The First Avenger, Benecio Del Toro in Guardians of the Galaxy; and not to mention that whole Avengers team that includes 4 Oscar nominees (Downey, Renner, Ruffalo, and Jackson) alone. Most recently, Marvel has scored with Oscar winners Robert Redford and Michael Douglas as key contributors with Dr. Strange full of Oscar-nominees and winners coming soon.

Thor: Ragnorak still has many features of the production unconfirmed, but we do know it will be filming in Austraila with stars Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston set to return. Taika Waititi is rumored to be directing the film which is slated to his theaters on July 28, 2017.
