CBMB: Marvel Debuts a New Black Panther Trailer!

By Muuka Muyumba

Marvel’s Black Panther is the studio’s first foray into the expansive history of the Black Panther character as well as the people of Wakanda. Chadwick Boseman stars as T’Challa, the newly crowned king of Wakanda who took over the mantle after his father T’Chaka’s (John Kani) death during the event of the Captain America: Civil War. T’Challa underwent a short-form transformation in that film as he learned that vengeance was a path to destruction. In his first solo film, director Ryan Coogler looks to further T’Challa’s growth as a king as Wakanda comes onto the national stage, and as he emerges as a world protector ala Iron Man.

The film features as a star-studded cast of characters including the return of Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis) as a major antagonist. The main antagonist of the film is Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) who is an exiled Wakandan looking for his own claim to the crown with the help of Klaw who we know has seen the storied motherland before.

Black Panther also stars Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Leticia Wright, Martin Freeman, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Kaluuya, Danai Gurira, and Florence Kasumba. Most fanboys and girls have been frothing at the mouth for this film, but still don’t really know where this fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, nor do they know whether we’ll see other MCU characters. Recently, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been teasing that their films may be reaching a point at which time they will start to diverge from the larger tapestry after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Black Panther may be our first glimpse of that post-Avengers world.

Marvel’s Black Panther hits theaters in February 2018.
